Alzheimer's is an ugly thing. It takes a woman who was vivacious and fun-loving, a woman who made the most amazing meals and could decorate beautiful cakes and cookies, a woman who LOVED kids and looked forward to the day she could be the doting grandmother. It takes this awesome woman and turns her into a mere shell of her former self. In only her 50's, it turns her into someone her young granddaughters help to spoon feed and wash her hair while she lies in bed unable to sit up on her own, unable to speak her grandchildren's names, and unable to enjoy the wonderful family and legacy that she created. My children and nieces and nephews love their Momo so much and are learning so many things about compassion, unconditional love, and serving others through her battle. But I wish, I so, so wish that instead they were learning to roll out sugar cookies, going on nature hikes, and getting to know the incredible person who raised me and my three brothers.
The Alzheimer's Association works hard to support families dealing with dementia and they support research to try and stop this devastating disease. I pray that the money raised at this year's walk will help find a cure, find a prevention, and prevent other families in the future from losing their loved ones long before they're actually gone.
Thank you for helping us advance Alzheimer's support, care and research!
