COACH POWERS BLITZ ALZ CHALLENGE

Mizzou's 1978 Liberty Bowl team and their Coach, Warren Powers will be honored at University of Missouri's Homecoming game on October 20, 2018.

Coach Warren Powers was inducted into The Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. The former Mizzou football coach grew up in KC, played college ball at Nebraska, and went on to play six seasons in the AFL for the Oakland Raiders. Playing safety, Powers had 22 career interceptions and played in Super Bowl II where they lost to the Green Bay Packers.

From there, he assisted Nebraska football for eight seasons and then became Head Coach at Washington State where he beat Nebraska for the first time. In 1978, he returned home and spent 7 years as Head Coach at Mizzou compiling a 46-33-3 record.  During his tenure, the Tigers beat Notre Dame, Nebraska, Oklahoma twice, Kansas four times, and went on to play in 5 bowl games with three bowl wins.

In his first game at Mizzou in 1978, the Tigers beat Notre Dame. That season they also beat Nebraska and went on to beat Louisiana State at the Liberty Bowl- finishing 15th in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. To mark the 40th anniversary, Mizzou will honor Coach Powers and the Liberty Bowl team at homecoming October 20.

TODAY, COACH POWERS IS FACING HIS TOUGHEST OPPONENT YET- ALZHEIMER'S.

Coach is one of an estimated 50 million people worldwide are living with Alzheimer's or other dementias, including more than 5 million Americans. In the United States alone, 16 million friends and family members are providing their care. We must take action now, or these numbers will continue to rise.

To mark the 40th anniversary, the Power's have initiated the Coach Powers Blitz ALZ Challenge to raise funds for Alzheimer's research and care and support services for those affected. This challenge is part of The Longest Day, a fundraising event to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
