Our Team Story
As my dad entered his 70s, Mom used to put him on the phone with me. She'd hold the phone and say, "Bill, Loren wants to talk to you."
I'll never forget the first time I heard him say, "Who's Loren?”
Before I knew it, the man I admired more than anyone else no longer recognized me, and in fact was mostly annoyed by my presence. Alzheimer's disease destroyed my father's vibrant life and nearly took down my mom (his caregiver) in the process. And it frankly made me wonder what the future holds for me ... and my sons.
Of course, I know that the brutal Alzheimer's story is not unique to my family. I've learned that it affects tens of millions of families in the U.S. and across the globe, including the family of my friend and fellow author, Louise Borden, who also lost her father to the disease.
Louise and I decided that we wanted to do something to fight Alzheimer's disease, and that we would ask our colleagues in the field of children's books to join us! So, if you are an author, illustrator, editor, publisher, librarian, teacher, reader or bookseller - or just want to make a difference - please make a donation and help us fund critical Alzheimer's research.
We'd also love if you participated in in our Napkin Elephant Challenge. To join in on the fun, follow these steps:
- Draw a doodle of an elephant on a napkin and sign it. To see examples, visit our photo album here.
- Take a picture of your doodle.
- Post the picture on your favorite social media platform and help spread the word by including our website www.books4brainsendalz.com and the hashtags #books4brains and #endalz.
Thank you so much for your support. We can't wait to see the impact we make through this campaign!
With great respect and admiration,
