“The Longest Day” Event in the Portland Memory Garden
On Wednesday, June 20, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Friends of the Portland Memory Garden, in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, invites you to participate in “The Longest Day,” an event to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s and help support the progress being made to end this devastating disease. As we near the summer solstice of 16 hours of daylight—we reflect on the difficult hours that Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers experience.
The goal of this event is to bring more people to the garden and have them experience connections to the natural world as we seek support to maintain the garden and contribute to help in ending Alzheimer’s. We will have fun for all ages, including live music, activities for children, opportunities for people to honor loved ones, plant sale, silent auction, and refreshments. Today, over 35 million people across the world are living with Alzheimer's, including more than 5 million Americans. In the U.S. alone, more than 15 million caregivers generously dedicate themselves to those with Alzheimer's and dementia. We must take action now, or these numbers will continue to rise.
The Portland Memory Garden in southeast Portland, Oregon, was created and especially designed as a safe and restorative space for those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and for their caregivers. For over 16 years, this special garden has provided families, memory care communities, and neighbors a serene place to stroll, sit in the sun, picnic, and enliven all the senses through the horticultural rich plantings.
