is participating to honor:
Dear Friends and Family,
It is that time of year again! I have the honor of co-chairing The Longest Day event for the Colorado Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association again for the fourth year in a row. On June 21st, the longest day of the year, people everywhere will spend the day doing something they love, while raising funds and awareness, to honor someone facing this disease or someone they have lost to it. And Bob and I are ready to start recruiting and fundraising for our team - Mile High Memory Club!
As many of you know, my mother has been suffering from Alzheimer's for years. If you have ever known anyone with Alzheimer's, then you know what a cruel disease this is. Once diagnosed, the person knows their fate. There are no survivors. And along the way, this disease destroys a person's brain, including robbing them of everything they have spent their whole life creating......their memories. Imagine not knowing your husband of 50 years. Or your children's names. It is a cruel and unfair way to spend the remainder of one's life.
This past year has been an especially difficult one for my family as my mother has declined significantly. Over the holidays, we had to make the difficult decision that it was time to move her to a memory care home. As sad as this decision was, it was the right decision for both her and my father, who has been her sole caregiver. And I feel blessed that we were able to move her to Colorado where my sister, Shannon, and I are now able to see her every day.
For the past couple of years, our team has hiked a 14'er for our Longest Day event. This year we are doing something a little different. As I mentioned, my father has been caring for my mother for years now. There are no words to describe the strength, love and patience he has shown as he watches his wife of 52 years slip away. It takes a very special person to care for someone with Alzheimer's and my father is that person. For this reason, we are also honoring him, as a caregiver, for The Longest Day this year. And what better way to do that than to play golf! Anyone who knows Dick Tierney knows that playing golf is one of his favorite things to do. It will be a special day as he is also now living in Colorado and will be joining us for this event.
So the Mile High Memory Club will hold a golf tournament on Wednesday, June 21st, and we welcome you to come out and play with us. We are still working on the details but if you are interested, please let us know. We will be sending updates once we know time of day and location.
If you are unable to join us that day, please support this cause and donate to the Alzheimer's Association through our team page by clicking on the "DONATE" button.
Every day is "the longest day" for someone suffering from Alzheimer's. Together, we can put an end to this disease.
