En Pointe for ALZ
On June 21st, The Longest Day, I'm going en pointe for Alzheimer's. It's been 13 years since I last wore pointe shoes. For a time, I was grateful to put them away, save my feet, and focus in on starting a new, "normal" life.
Today though, I imagine...what would it be like if I ever forgot how to dance, or what dance has brought to my life? What if I could not recall my first performance memories? What if I could not remember my favorite ballets, modern choreographers, teachers words of wisdom, amazing co-company members, and favorite dance steps? Thought of that makes me depressed quite frankly.
Now, consider...it's possible not only to forget something you love, but someone you love. Or some people you love. Or forget who you are. This makes me sick to my stomach.
Over the past 5 years I have unexpectedly found my way to serve a community affected by Alzheimer's. While working within senior living services, I have heard the heartbreak of families who lose a loved one that's actually still living. I have put on the shoes of a combative resident with dementia. I have helped maintain basic dignity by collecting soiled clothing from bedroom floors. I have listened patiently at someone's side as they tell me a story while in reality their words carry no meaning at all.
Alzheimer's and dementia steal these things and more from over 35 million people across the world, including more than 5 million Americans. In addition, more than 15 million American caregivers generously dedicate themselves to those with Alzheimer's and dementia. The numbers affected are projected to triple by the year 2050.
Together, we can show those facing Alzheimer's disease that they are not alone. On June 21st I plan to dance en pointe again. With your sponsorship through a donation, I'll perform a solo in honor of those affected by Alzheimer's.
Want to up the ante? Consider making a gift that really humbles me:
For a $50 gift, I will perform a dance move of your choice in the solo.
For a $100 gift, you can request a costume piece I wear (crown, wings, pink tights, ugh, tutu...)
For a $500 gift, you can choose the song I choreograph.
Please make a donation today to help the Alzheimer's Association support all those facing the disease. Donations are tax deductible. Behind the US government and Chinese govenment, the Alzheimer's Association is the 3rd largest funder in the world for Alzheimer's and dementia disease research. Can you help?
