It's ALZ Jam!

In Brooklyn in the early 20th century,  my father Salvatore and his 11 siblings worked with my grandfather Michael growing the food they needed to survive. No surprise, then,  that I also developed a passion for home gardening.

In his 70's my grandfather developed what they called "hardening of the arteries" -he became confused and out of touch. Then his daughter, my Aunt Rose - active, healthy and barely 60 - showed the first signs of the Alzheimer's that eventually took her from us. In the end, five other siblings, my Dad included, developed forms of dementia that stole parts of their lives.

On The Longest Day, a day that’s all about love for all those affected by Alzheimer's disease, my friends and I will be turning the bumper crop of blackberries that I grew along my Hollywood bungalow into blackberry jam, in honor of my inspirational Aquino forebears.  And we'll be sending jars of our EndALZ jam to the first 10 people who donate $200 to the Alzheimer’s Association to help raise awareness, support those affected and find a cure!
