As a television news reporter and evening anchor I have covered all kinds of stories over my 40 years in the business. I’ve seen a lot! The good, bad and the ugly. No matter how sad or horrible or shocking the story I always maintained by composure on the air. But when it came to reporting on Alzheimer’s Disease that was a different story. Talking about the ravages of Alzheimer’s on its victims and the heartache inflicted on families hit home for me. Several of my relatives are suffering with the disease. One recently passed away. In fact, just about everyone I know is touched in some way by this disease.
So for the past 4 years I've served as a Dancing Stars Judge. But when the Alzheimer’s Association asked me to be a contestant, well, honestly, that took a little arm twisting. Yes, I like to dance but let me be clear - I am no Dancer, as in performer. In the end I decided I will not allow my fear drown my opportunity to help move us closer to a cure.
More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s! 15 million+ are unpaid caregivers- family members. I’m guessing YOU know someone in one of those statistics. The numbers are staggering and will only get bigger if we don't do something. It will take all of us.
I’m asking you to support me in this fun and significantly substantive endeavor.
We need to do this so that our children and their children will never have to face the heartache and suffering of Alzheimer’s Disease.
