Fundraising Honor Roll

My name is Stuart Neil Slappey.  I have many jobs but my favorite is Husband and Father.  I have been married to my wife Jenny for 17 years and we have 3 beautiful children, Sydney (13), Will (12), and Susanna (7).  I grew up in Warner Robins and attended Houston County High School and graduated in 1995 as one of the first class to go all 4 years through the school.  After high school I went to Macon College and the University of Georgia.  I graduated with a B.S. in Biology in 1999 and with a M.S. of Genetic Reproduction in Poultry Science in 2000.  I then attended The College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated with a D.V.M. in 2004.
In May of 2004 I practiced veterinary medicine at Westmoreland Animal Hospital.  In 2009, Dr. Westmoreland and I became partners and started Westmoreland & Slappey Animal Hospital.
I have been very blessed and owe all I have to my Savior, Jesus Christ.  I was raised with 2 loving Christian parents,.George and Nancy Slappey and an brother, Matt Slappey.
Along with being a veterinarian, my wife and I have a home based business with Nerium International and we own a small pecan farm.  Our favorite activities are raising up our kids, helping other people to be happy/successful, being beach bums, traveling and (for me) deer hunting.
In 2009 at the age of 31, I had a stroke. Crazy, but yes a stroke.  Jenny called 911, rushed me to the Medical Center and prayed and watched as tests were being performed.  I was given a clot busting medication and was able to move my extremities early the next morning.  After 7 days in the hospital I was discharged.  I felt a little lost.  Being a man, with many responsibilities I felt inadequate.  I couldn't talk, I limped a little due to weakness on my right side, but no one knew.  Through many long days and long drawn out prayers (due to the fact I couldn't speak or maintain focus) I could function pretty well after 3 weeks.  I still couldn't feel my right fingers or right side of my lips or my right big toe, and struggled when I spoke.  With lots of speech therapy, many prayers, many patient people and an amazing supplement (EHT) I am healthier now than I have been in 15 years.
My family has been very blessed and we have never personally had to fight Alzheimer's disease.  However, we have known many friends that have had to deal with Alzheimer's as well as their families.  I believe we have to work as hard as we can at diagnosis, treating and preventing/curing this disease.  I also believe the education or people who are diagnosed with Alzheimer's and their families is very important, and I will do my best to help people with Alzheimer's and other neurological diseases to fight; deal and cure these diseases, whether is it through prayers, support, lending my ear or even TRYING to dance!
