Background...
My name is Caren Minniti and as many of you know I have wanted to run in the New York City marathon pretty much since I stumbled upon it November 2006. Although running a marathon has been on my bucket list since December 2004, I knew I needed to run it in NYC after welling with tears the last three years as I watch people run for people and support so many great causes.
I was able to get into the race through New York Road Runners since I completed the appropriate 9 races + volunteer opportunity. I am not running with a group, but I knew I was going to run for a cause on my own. Last December on a visit home from NYC I was talking with a neighbor about my search for running for a meaningful cause. Due to some unfortunate circumstances I found that purpose and it happens to be in honor of that same neighbor's husband, my lifelong neighbor and doctor, Dr. Andy Nutini.
In mid June Dr. Nutini (whom I usually refer to as Dr. Nute) was diagnosed with early Alzheimers. This was devastating news to the Doc himself, his family, friends and numerous patients. Dr. Nute is fifty four years old, married for thirty years with one son and three daughters, and two grandchildren, both three years old. The whole family has been part of my life since we moved next door when I was five years old.
With the best interest of his family and patients he decided to retire earlier than anticipated. Dr. Nute loved being a doctor and his patients adore him. Over 800 people attended his retirement party to express their love for him and all he means to them and the community. He has always put others in front of himself and running in his honor is the least I can do to give back to him and his wife, Nancy, and family.
I can remember coming home from college and having him decipher what my ailment could be or look at my latest athletic injury. After moving to NYC I never found a primary care physician because I really didn’t want someone else and I trusted Dr. Nute over the phone more than builiding a relationship with another physician I didn’t know. He is known for taking time with every single patient and that is a real treasure in today’s fast-pace world.
By running in his honor I am asking for donations to theAlzheimers Association. I know he will get me to the finish line of 26.2 miles. Help me reach my goal and more importantly let's help Dr. Nute fight the good fight!
