The handsome guy in this photo is my husband's grandpa, Don. Don and his wife Janet (left) used to be avid euchre players. It was Don's favorite game. We would get together as a family and play at just about every holiday and gathering, Don cracking jokes and making us laugh the whole time, usually while he was winning. A few years ago, Don stopped playing euchre. Though he'd been playing for 60+ years, he could no longer remember how to play. As his Alzheimer's disease has progressed to the middle-late stages, Don is now in an Assisted Living facility, where he needs help bathing, dressing, eating and doing even the most basic things that we take for granted every day. He has trouble speaking more than a few words at at time, and although his eyes light up when he sees us, he doesn't always remember that we are his grandkids.
On March 22, we're going to fight for Don, and for the 5 million Americans like him, by playing euchre in his honor. Our goal is to raise funds for Michigan RivALZ -- funds that will help provide care and support for families like mine, and hopefully one day, a cure for Alzhiemer's.
Please join us for a night of Euchre, food, laughter and prizes at Conor O'Neills in Ann Arbor on Thursday, 3/22 from 7-9pm. To sign up to play, simply make a suggested $40 donation to my Personal Fundraising Page and your name will be added to the list. Let's enjoy a night where we make new memories together and help save those of the ones we love.
