On Saturday, May 13th, I will be participating in my 4th Blondes vs. Brunettes flag football game to raise funds and awareness in the fight against Alzheimer’s. This year, I am proud to be participating as both the Team Captain of the Brunettes and Chairwoman of the entire event. All proceeds go directly towards the Alzheimer’s Association.
As you may know, this is a cause that hits home for me as I lost my grandmother (and one of my biggest cheerleaders) to Alzheimer’s in 2011. Over the past year, I have gained a new perspective on the years before and after my grandmother was diagnosed. I have realized the importance of AWARENESS of the Alzheimer’s disease. My grandmother showed signs of Alzheimer’s two years before she was officially diagnosed. And after she was diagnosed, the Alzheimer’s advanced quickly and her condition deteriorated in less than a year.
As I become more involved in the fight against Alzheimer’s, I realize that if my family could have recognized the signs in those early years, things could have been much different in terms of how we cared for her and the services available to both her and my family.
Through this game and my role as an Alzheimer’s advocate, I am fighting to spread awareness of Alzheimer’s and its effects on the families, caregivers, and our economy. For every Alzheimer’s patient, there are at least 2-3 caregivers which makes Alzheimer’s one of the most economically damaging diseases.
I’m asking for your support whether it be a monetary donation, spreading awareness, or volunteering for your local Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s affects all of us in some way and only we can work together to fight it!
Thank you and go Brunettes!!
