Alzheimer's Association

Welcome to our monthly e-newsletter to keep you up to date on everything happening in our chapter's 7,400 square mile area. Please send any feedback, information on your fundraising efforts and pictures to Kristy at infoseva@alz.org.

The Longest Day

Join us on Friday, June 21, 2013, The Longest Day of the year, as we honor those living with Alzheimer's and their caregivers. Organize a team for this sunrise-to-sunset event and raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer's care, support and research. This event is about patience, strength and endurance — but it's also about a challenge. On The Longest Day, do something you love — or try something new — to advance the cause! For you, this challenge is one day. For people with Alzheimer’s disease, it’s every day.  Sign up!

Scholarships are available for MedicAlert®+Alzheimer’s Association Safe Return® and the Alzheimer’s Association Comfort Zone®

FY13 Safety Month headerThanks to generous donors, our Chapter is able to provide scholarships for MedicAlert®+SafeReturn®, the 24-hour nationwide emergency response service for individuals with Alzheimer’s or related dementia who wander or who have a medical emergency. Scholarships cover initial enrollment for the individual ($55) and caregiver ($35, if so desired) plus the shipping and handling charges. Each enrolled person receives a stainless steel bracelet with the MedicAlert® logo on top and an 800 number on the back. Identification aids and confidential medical information are maintained in a secure database (accessed through an 800 number) and are available only to first responders to aid searching and treatment when needed.

The Alzheimer’s Association Comfort Zone® is a web-based GPS location management service that can help individuals stay active and has proven especially helpful to early stage individuals. Comfort Zone automatically includes an enrollment in MedicAlert®+Safe Return® for total coverage. To learn whether Comfort Zone is right for you, call 1.877.259.4850 or visit www.alz.org/comfortzone. To apply for this service using a scholarship, contact our local chapter using the Helpline (800.272.3900). The best protection against the problem of getting lost or wandering is to plan ahead and enroll in a program that addresses wandering. Call us today to get more information or obtain an application for these proven services.

To start the enrollment process please call the Helpline 800.272.3900 and ask for Mary Catherine in the Norfolk office.

Cookbook Friendraiser
How would you feel if your traditional family recipes were lost forever? Most likely awful! When Barbara Magro heard the diagnosis of her mother’s disease in 2006 and witnessed her mother’s decline, she set out to preserve her family recipes that were at the heart of her upbringing. Recipes to Remember - My Epicurean Journey to Preserve my Mother’s Italian Cooking from Memory Loss is the result. As seen in the Wall Street Journal, Daytime TV and WPLG 10 Miami. To purchase a book for $30, please call us at 757.459.2405. $5 from each book sold through our office will be donated to our chapter. Please make checks payable to Barbara Magro and send to Alzheimer's Association, 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502.
