A Message from Jennifer Howard, Executive Director
Jennifer HowardTax Check OffI am so happy to share amazing news that represents a huge victory for all of our families in Michigan. The Alzheimer’s Association Michigan Tax Check Off legislation was passed through the House and Senate and signed by Governor Snyder on June 27! This means that Michiganders will have the option of donating directly to the Alzheimer’s Association through their state tax income forms. The monies generated through these funds will go directly towards programs and services for families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease in Michigan! This will allow us to reach so many more families who need our help! Thank YOU to all of our advocates who sent emails, made phone calls and traveled to Lansing to tell their stories. Thank you also to Gretchen Smith, who testified in front of the taxation committee to make this happen. On behalf of all of us at the Alzheimer’s Association and the families we serve, a special thank you goes out to Representative Matt Lori and Senators John Pappageorge and Rebekah Warren - sponsors of our bills. Thank you for your leadership and care!

2009 Father's Day Premium - Golf BallsThe Alzheimer’s Association, Michigan Great Lakes Chapter just hosted its 17th annual Ann Arbor Charity Golf Outing on July 8, and it was a huge success! We almost filled the course with 143 golfers! We also surpassed our goal of $67,000 gross revenue raised! This event would not happen without the love and support of our Event Chair - State Representative and Democratic Floor Leader David Rutledge. David has been chairing this event since its inception 17 years ago and has been such a great friend to our chapter. Thank you, David! I also want to extend my sincere thanks to our presenting sponsors - Bill Young from Absopure and David Lusk from EQ. Also, my sincere thanks goes out to Ambassador Ronald Weiser - our Platinum Sponsor. I want to send a personal thank you to Lauren Smith, a caregiver and inspiration who traveled to Ann Arbor to speak to our golfers about her story. Thank you, Lauren! Thank you also to all of our sponsors and golfers for making this such a fun outing!

Meet a Walk Team Leading the Way
Claire DurocherThe Dargis Family - Les Éclaires is a French Canadian team participating for the first time in the Ann Arbor Walk to End Alzheimer’s. They walk to honor the life of their mother, grandmother, wife, sister, cousin, aunt, and all around Wonder Woman - Claire Durocher. She was a wonderful mother to her 5 children, grandmother to 11 loving grandkids, and wife to her husband of 40+ years. She dedicated her life to caring for others, working as a nurse and being an active volunteer member of her church. She was also very active in local politics.

Claire’s granddaughter Anne-Catherine says, “She was originally diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Shortly thereafter, her dementia was accompanied by tremors and other physical manifestations, and she was re-diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia at 65 years old. She was then admitted to a facility to better care for her changing needs. The Alzheimer’s Association provided our family with a lot of information about dementia.”

Unfortunately, Claire passed away in 2008 at the age of 75.  The family has thought about starting a walk team for awhile now, but when Claire’s daughter Genevieve Dargis turned 50 years old earlier this year, she asked family and friends to make donations towards their family’s walk team in lieu of gifts. They walk so no family has to suffer the same loss that they did by raising awareness and funds to fight this terrible disease. They walk to advance research to treat and prevent Alzheimer's and provide programs to improve the lives of millions of affected Americans (and Canadians!).

What's your reason to walk?  Please find a walk near you and register your family today.
