Go Purple in September for World Alzheimer's Month

Connecticut Chapter

Go Purple in September for World Alzheimer's Month!

September is World Alzheimer's month-a time to shine a purple light for the 35.6 million people globally afflicted with Alzheimer's.  We need your help to honor the millions of people who struggle with this disease every day by mobilizing friends, families, neighbors, and coworkers to help bring an end to Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia and is fatal.  Currently there is no way to prevent, cure or slow the progression of Alzheimer's, and it is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States.

The time is now to go purple during World Alzheimer's Month.  The End of Alzheimer's starts with YOU.  Click here for information on our Purple with a Purpose Campaign or connect with the Connecticut Chapter on Facebook

Connecticut Walk to End Alzheimer's-Join us!

Walk to End Alzheimer’s unites the entire community — family, friends, co-workers, social and religious groups and more --- in a display of combined strength and dedication in the fight against this devastating disease. At a Walk event, you can learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and the support programs and services offered by the Connecticut Chapter. You will also have unique opportunities to get involved with the cause through advocacy initiatives and clinical trial enrollment. These experiences, in addition to other on-site opportunities, help each participant connect to their reason for walking.
Our fall walks are on September 29, 30, and October 14th at 5 locations throughout the state.  Join us this fall at Walk and unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions.

Spotlight on an Advocate: Mike Tobin

Mike Tobin is a star advocate for the Connecticut Chapter.  He participated in the Walk for several years and became more involved as a volunteer with the Chapter following his wife’s passing 3 years ago from Younger-Onset Alzheimer’s.   As an advocate, he has testified at the state capitol about the importance of the Alzheimer’s statewide respite program. He serves on the Public Policy Committee and is the Alzheimer’s Ambassador to Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro.

“You can never have enough people speaking about Alzheimer’s disease, whether they are talking to legislators, physicians, friends and others in the community. There always needs to be a voice to maintain awareness. People can get involved by contacting the Alzheimer’s Association, get trained, volunteer and get involved in whatever you can”.

Early Stage

Early Stage Programs

The Alzheimer's Association Connecticut Chapter is committed to providing opportunities for early-stage individuals to make meaningful contributions socially, politically, culturally and in other ways that bring purpose to their lives.  One of our newer programs, Living with Alzheimer's Disease: For People with Alzheimer's Disease is designed for individuals with early-stage Alzheimer's and their care partner. The program provides the knowledge, tools and strategies needed to cope with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or related dementias. For more information about our programs, please contact Carolyn DeRocco at CDerocco@alz.org

Why I Walk: Laura Wirtz

This is Laura’s 4th year participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. She became involved after a relative was diagnosed with Younger-Onset Alzheimer’s. It saddened her to see this once beautiful, vibrant woman slowly disappear, and Laura felt empowered to make a difference. She joined a team in her first year, then connected with her company and started her own team representing Bank of America.   In addition to walking, Laura has coordinated events at her workplace to educate and raise awareness. This fall will be Team Bank of America’s third year participating and will have teams at the Hartford, Waterford and Enfield Walk. In addition to her team, Laura helped create the glass Alzheimer’s bead which has been a fundraising incentive for walkers in Connecticut for the past few years. Thank you Laura for your time and energy towards our vision of a world without Alzheimer’s disease.
