Senate subcommittee proposes $414 million NIH research funding increase
The Senate Appropriations Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies (Labor-HHS) Subcommittee has proposed a $414 million increase for Alzheimer’s research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for fiscal year 2018. This announcement comes following similar action by the House Appropriations Committee in July.

Lack of REM sleep may increase risk of dementia
People who spend less time in deep, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep may have a higher risk of developing dementia than individuals who get better quality rest, recent research suggests. The researchers said that study participants spent about 20 percent of their sleeping time in REM sleep, but for those who went on to develop dementia, it was only 17 percent. This study adds to the growing evidence that sleep quality is related to brain health, but more research is needed to determine if poor sleep causes dementia or vice versa.
