August 2013

A Message from Jennifer Howard, Executive Director
Jennifer HowardIt’s hard to believe how fast the summer is going by and how quickly our Walk to End Alzheimer’s events are happening! Our first Walk is Saturday, August 17 in St. Joseph. Please see the article below on a wonderful new family team from that Walk. Also, please take a look at our Walk sponsors listed below. We would not be able to host these wonderful events which support our mission without their help! There are great people behind these company names who are true champions for the Alzheimer’s Association and the families we serve. If you have not registered for your local Walk yet, please do so today! The time is now!

AAIC 2013Last month, over 4,000 leading researchers from over 70 countries gathered in Boston for the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference - the largest Alzheimer’s conference in the world. Each year, we get closer and closer to unlocking the secrets of Alzheimer’s disease, and this year was no exception. Promising information on a diabetes drug, later retirement age and some types of cancer all are being linked to a lower risk of dementia. Also, it was found that online testing for Alzheimer’s was NOT effective. Please see these new releases and other updates at alz.org/aaic.

African-Americans and Alzheimer's diseaseResearch is a critical piece of our mission but so is the care and support of our families living with Alzheimer’s now. We were excited to learn that we are receiving grant monies to launch a new program for outreach into our African American communities. We couldn’t be happier! We know that African Americans are disproportionately affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementias - 2-3 times more likely than their Caucasian counterparts. Our mission is to be an ongoing resource for education and support to all of our families, and through the help of some great communities partners, we are hoping to reach more of our African American families through local churches and other groups.

Enjoy the rest of the summer with your families! I look forward to seeing many of you at our Walks!

My best,
Jennifer Howard Signature

Meet a Walk Team Leading the Way
Gayle DanielTeam Gayle’s Gems will be joining the movement to end Alzheimer's disease by taking part for the first time in the Walk to End Alzheimer's on August 17 in St. Joseph at a new location this year – Silver Beach Carousel.

Three years ago, Team Captain Liz Calo’s mom Gayle Daniel was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) at the age of 63.  Gayle is a retired 3rd grade teacher who touched many lives through her love and dedication to all the children who passed through her classroom during her 20 year tenure.   She continues to be a blessing to the Stevensville community, a member of the St. Joseph Church of Christ and always a willing servant to anyone in need.

Their family’s journey with FTD has been a difficult one - full of many challenges.  However, Gayle has been continually surrounded by so much love, support and strength.  Liz says, “This disease is one that affects the entire family, and the support has truly kept us going each step of the way in our care for mom.”

Their walk team consists of family (including Gayle’s husband Clyde, their children and grandchildren), friends and church members who have come together to show their love and support for this amazing woman.  Their hope is to raise awareness and funds to contribute to the research and treatment of brain diseases such as FTD, dementia and Alzheimer's disease.  Liz adds, “In honor of the many ways my mom has deeply touched the lives of those around her, we are ALL on board to Walk to End Alzheimer's!”  Their team is currently in 2nd place on the team honor roll - raising $2,065 in a short amount of time.

If your family is personally affected by FTD, Alzheimer's disease or other dementias and you want to learn more about how your family can register for the walk, please visit alz.org/mglc or call 800.272.3900.

What's your reason to walk?  Please find a walk near you and register your family today.
