Brain injury in veterans may be tied to higher risk of Alzheimer's disease
Military veterans who suffered brain injuries during their service were more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease decades later, according to a new study. Research showed that 16 percent of the more 180,000 veterans aged 55 and above studied who had suffered a serious head injury had been diagnosed with dementia, compared to 10 percent of those without a brain injury — a 60 percent increase. The researchers said the connection between brain injuries and dementia is unclear and that the injuries studied were of the severe, traumatic variety, not concussions similar to those experienced by athletes such as soccer players.
