A Message from Jennifer Howard, Executive Director
Jennifer HowardThe two Michigan Chapters of the Alzheimer's Association hosted its 3rd Annual Alzheimer’s Awareness Day on May 11 at Comerica Park. The Detroit Tigers played the Cleveland Indians in weather that only die hard fans would endure. It was cold, windy, rainy, and to top that off, the Tigers were defeated 7-6. But, it was an evening of fun for over 300 people who purchased special ticket packages which included a hot dog, chips and pop as well as an official Alzheimer’s Awareness Day t-shirt!  Most importantly, we brought awareness to more than 41,000 fans that Alzheimer's disease is the single largest unaddressed public health threat facing the nation.

Did you know? State Representative David Rutledge has been a long time supporter of the Alzheimer's Association and has served as the Ann Arbor Charity Golf Outing Chair since its inception 17 years ago. He says, "I am extremely proud of the efforts in the community and look forward to the continued involvement of the sponsors and players who helped make this event such a success to date.”

Our chapter is very pleased to share that Rutledge was recently elected as
Democratic Floor Leader by fellow members of the Michigan House Democratic Caucus. If you would like to personally congratulate him, register your golf team today and join him on July 8th in Ann Arbor. Congratulations David!

Meet a Walk Team Leading the Way
Team VanderVeerTeam Vander Veer is walking in the Ludington Walk to End Alzheimer’s again this year in honor of Alice Vander Veer aka “Alice the Great” - their Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. Alice has been living with Alzheimer’s for 9 years. After the death of her husband, the family started noticing that she just wasn’t the same. It finally got to the point where it was not safe for her to live at home alone, so she moved into Sutter Living Center in Ludington, where she has been receiving exceptional care.

Her daughter Sharon says, “Ever so slowly the disease has taken her away from us. We are fortunate that she still recognizes us, but she does not always remember our names.”

Her granddaughter Karen shares, “She just thinks I am the crazy lady that crawls up to her with a big smile and says “Hi Grandma!” She doesn’t say much anymore, which I can imagine is very frustrating. I walk because I don’t want my 11-year-old son to ever have to see me in that situation. I want this disease to end. I know I can never get my Grandma back to the woman I knew growing up, but I can help prevent this from happening to my Mom or any of my family or friends and myself.”

Sharon adds, “We have to get together and fight this disease.” If you want to support Team Vander Deer, please visit their webpage. Or if their story motivates you to “get together and fight”, please find a walk near you and register your family to participate.

Brad Kloha is just your average guy who decided to take action - but no small action - he hopes to raise $1 million. He’s not a professional athlete, but he iscompleting 100 races in a year, which will be a physical and mental challenge like nothing he has experienced before. But, he has passion. He has a passion for running the races he runs. He has a passion to do something on a grand scale and make a difference. Most of all, he has a passion to do his part to find a cure for the disease that claimed members of his family.

Brad says, “When I was very young, too young to truly understand what Alzheimer's was, I lost my great-grandmother to the disease. More recently, however, I watched my grandmother lose her 13-year battle with disease. He invited you to visit his website – runtoremember.net  – and share your own story on his Memory Wall. You can also view his Race Calendar to see when he will be competing in our chapter, including these upcoming local summer races:
  • Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30 | Tough Mudder | Brooklyn
  • Saturday, July 13 | The Color Run | Lansing
