Objectives:

  • Explain the meaning and sources of “hope” in the care of deeply forgetful individuals
  • Describe the role of “positive psychology” in the lives and care of deeply forgetful individuals and their carers
  • List 3 current practical ethical issues in the progression of dementia.

  10:30—12:00 BREAKOUT SESSIONS

[A] Effective Dialogues for Living Well with Alzheimer’s

Objectives:

  • Identify communication strategies that are used as coping skills
  • Learn about individual and family experiences with cognitive impairment
  • Discuss effective communication strategies for assisting families and persons with dementia

 [B] Caregiving and Balancing Life

Objectives:

  • Create an action plan to enhance the quality for life for the caregiver and person living with the disease.
  • Understand the effects of co-morbidity on the caregiver and the person with the diagnosis.
  • Identify strategies to take an active role in caregiving and address behaviors.

 [C] Moving Towards Precision Medicine in Alzheimer’ Disease

Objectives:

  • Summarize the heterogeneity of Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Describe the potential role of precision medicine in the diagnosis, clinical research, and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Describe the growing role of biomarkers in early diagnosis

 

1:15—2:45 BREAKOUT SESSIONS

[D] Navigating the Spectrum of Care in Dementia: How to Maximize Safety, Mobility & Environment

Objectives:  

  • Develop strategies to address the most common safety concerns in the home, facility or community with dementia.
  • Identify the components of mobility and cognition that are related to the ability to maintain independence and safety.
  • Discuss the different types of resources available for caregivers in relation to equipment needs, caregiver assistance, community programs, and rehab.

 [E] Wholeness Amid Brokenness: A Spiritual Perspective on Dementia

Objectives:

  • Articulate key spiritual experiences of clients, family caregivers and professionals in the confrontation with dementia.
  • Identify spiritual tools/resources, such as ritual, prayer, reminiscence, art and nature
  • Recognize that wholeness resides in the person with dementia, not just brokenness

 [F] Respect, Relational Autonomy & Safety in Deeply Forgetful People: An Ethical Discussion

Objectives:

  • Explain how respect for autonomy matters and can be safely implemented with limits.
  • Define the nature of relational autonomy, given the reality of dependence.
  • Identify the daily events where autonomy conflicts with well-being, caregiver wellness and safety.

 

3:00—4:15 PLENARY SESSION  

‘Oh He Was Forgettable: Self Identity & Communicative Coping Behaviors in Persons with Cognitive Impairment

Objectives:

  • Define communicative coping behaviors
  • List three kinds of communicative coping behaviors
  • Discuss the ways in which communicative coping behaviors can inform caregivers of meaningful interactions.
