Thorndale, PA My father's long battle against Alzheimer's disease ended November 19, 2008. When people think of Alzheimer's they relate it to memory loss and Alzheimer's did slowly rob him of his memory. Alzheimer's, however, does much more than take away a person's memories. Besides memories, Alzheimer's also affects the way a person thinks and has a real impact upon the person's psychological, emotional, spiritual, and physical health. Alzheimer's disease was first defined by Alois Alzheimer over 100 years ago. Today we still do not have a cure. Alzheimer's affects many more people than most realize. There are 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer's today. Did you know that every 72 seconds another American is diagnosed with Alzheimer's? More than likely you know someone who is battling this frustrating and ultimately deadly disease. Today we have hope that a cure will be found. We have some drugs that slow the progression somewhat but speaking from a family member's point of view these drugs don't do nearly enough. The race for a cure is on but searching for a cure is expensive. I'm participating in the Run to Remember a literal race to raise money to help propel the race for a cure toward that cure. This will be my third year participating as a Run to Remember team member. My first year I chose the 8K because prior to that I was not a runner and I needed to start somewhere. Last year I did the half marathon and increased my distance. This year I'm increasing my distance again. I'm going to run the marathon because that's what the battle against Alzheimer's is a marathon. |
Hanover, MD I run to honor my Role Model; My Hero; My Father. |
Somerset, NJ I'm running for two very important people in my life - two people who have shaped me into who I am today. First, for my grandfather, who passed away in 2009 with complications due to dementia. Second, for my grandmother, who is living with Alzheimer's disease. She is my inspiration and drive for everything I do, as well as my role model, hero, confidant, and heart. I can still spend time, talk, laugh, and hold my grandma's hand, but I miss her every day. Before my grandma moved to a memory care unit a few months ago, I helped my mom with her caregiving duties. I believe having the opportunity to care for my grandma, who cared for me growing up, is the highest honor of all, despite the devastation of this disease. I also run for my patients who have Alzheimer's or dementia. As an occupational therapist in a nursing home facility, about 85% of my patients have a diagnosis of Alzheimer's or dementia. Lastly, I run to support the millions of people currently living with Alzheimer's and their families so that they can get the help and support that they need. I pray every day for a future where Alzheimer's and dementia no longer exists. |
Philadelphia, PA I'm running to honor my Father, who has Alzheimer's and my Mother, his loving wife and caregiver AND support the Association in all of its efforts to serve those who face this disease and ultimately end it. |
Lithia, FL I am running for my beautiful grandmother and the father of my dear friend and colleague. These are two inspirational people in our lives who have truly had major impacts in shaping who we are. In both our cases, Alzheimer's has reared its ugliness and attacked our loved ones. As a proud Army veteran (and so too is my dear friend), it is instilled in us that when the enemy attacks; without hesitation, you attack back!! This run for me serves as a direct frontal attack against this horrible disease called Alzheimer's, and a dedication of my full support to all who continue to fight and seek to eliminate its attack on us! With the quality of medical researchers we have today, this disease can be stopped. Through God's grace our family was able to walk with him every step of the way through this horrible disease that took away his independence, the quick mind that he once had, and ultimately his life in 2013. The Alzheimer's Association provided us with valuable information and support through very difficult times and continues to work toward developing effective treatments for this disease. I am running to support this wonderful organization so they can continue to help families cope with this disease and work toward effective treatments and ultimately, a cure. |
