Why I got Involved
A personal connection to the disease is what weaves together these individuals
and is what drives them to fight Alzheimer's. They have seen their mothers, fathers and other loved ones slip away from the disease – and they are determined to not let their children and grandchildren grapple with the same fate.
Listen to some of our Champions share their personal experiences and why they got involved with our mission

Guardianship
Individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia may require assistance from a guardian, particularly when no advance directives exist. Differing systems of adult guardianship throughout the nation complicate matters as state courts attempt to determine jurisdiction. The Coalition encourages New York State to adopt the Uniform Adult Guardianship and Protective Proceedings Jurisdiction Act (UAGPPJA).
|
|
Advocate please take the following action:
Ask your Legislator: We ask that you support the passage of the UAGPPJA in the 2012 legislative session. Legislators can support the legislation in 3 ways: join the legislation as a co-sponsor when the bill is reintroduced in the Assembly and Senate; speak to Majority Leader Skelos and Speaker Silver to urge the passage of this legislation in 2013; and to vote in favor of the legislation when it comes up for a vote.

Funding Needed The Coalition is disappointed that the final fiscal year 2012-2013 budget does not include an additional $300,000 in funding for the Alzheimer’s Community Assistance Program (AlzCAP). Advocate please take the following action:
Ask your Legislator: We ask that you advocate for increased funding for the Alzheimer’s Community Assistance Program (AlzCAP) in the upcoming budget. Also, if you would be willing to write a letter in support of increased funding for AlzCAP in the 2013 state budget to Governor Cuomo and to leadership in their respective houses; Majority Leader Skelos and Speaker Silver.

or New York State Senate

National Plan on Alzheimer's
The National Alzheimer's Project Act (NAPA) is the largest legislative victory in many years for the Alzheimer's cause. Over the last several years, the Alzheimer's Association has been the leading voice in urging Congress and the White House to pass the National Alzheimer's Project Act (NAPA). The National Alzheimer's Project Act will create a coordinated national plan to overcome the Alzheimer's crisis and will ensure the coordination and evaluation of all national efforts in Alzheimer's research, clinical care, institutional, and home- and community-based programs and their outcomes.

Alzheimer's advocates were instrumental in moving NAPA through Congress. More than 50,000 e-mails, nearly 10,000 phone calls and more than 1,000 meetings by the Alzheimer's Association and its advocates led us to the historic legislative victory for the Alzheimer's community.
As a result, the first ever National Alzheimer's Plan is released — an historic achievement! The plan outlines the important goal of preventing and effectively preventing Alzheimer's disease by 2025.
Advocate please take the following action:
Please urge your member of Congress for their commitment to $100 million in resources for Alzheimer’s research, education, care and support.

The HOPE for Alzheimer's Act
The HOPE for Alzheimer’s Act would improve access to diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, provide information on medical and non-medical services for newly-diagnosed patients and their families, and document the diagnosis in the patient’s medical record.
Advocate please take the following action:
Please ask your members of Congress to support the HOPE for Alzheimer’s Act. As always, this message will be made much more powerful if you customize it with your personal story explaining why timely documentation of a diagnosis and care planning is so critical for families facing Alzheimer’s disease.

Social Security - Compassionate Allowance list
As a longtime advocate for those with Alzheimer’s, the Alzheimer’s Association was at the forefront of the effort to add early-onset Alzheimer’s to the Compassionate Allowances list. This victory will give those living with the disease expedited access to Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income.

Gold Alert - Governor Cuomo Signs Law On Monday, July 25, 2011 the Alzheimer's Association experienced a milestone win for adults with dementia or cognitive impairment in New York State - and we'd like to thank advocates and supporters like you for making it happen.
The new law will create a statewide alert system, for missing vulnerable adults, which will help authorities locate cognitively impaired adults who wander or go missing.
