A Christmas To Remember

Christmas of 1960 was filled with love and wonderful memories. My mom in 1960.

The summer before third grade, 1960, my father built a house next door to my maternal grandparents. It was wonderful living next door to them, especially my grandma who was very special to me. Our family shared that first Christmas in the house with our grandparents and it was a Christmas I would never forget. My mom bought me a bride doll, it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. My six brothers and sisters all had one nice gift that they wanted from Santa. I suspected my parents were the real Santa but would never have said so and disappoint the younger kids. My mom and grandma made cookies, fudge and other candies, and treats for us. They put them in sacks, along with nuts and fruit and gave each of us one of the bags. My grandpa added a large peppermint stick, which became a yearly gift. The love and tenderness that was put into those gifts have never been forgotten. It was probably my moms best Christmas as well. The following summer my oldest brother drown and life was never the same. Now my mom is 82, still living at home and has Alzheimer's Disease.I see her day to day memories slipping away but she remember all her children still and remembers the wonderful things we did together. I hope this Christmas will be one of the best memories I have of my mom, to add to my other favorite memory.
