Holiday Reflections

This Christmas I am thinking back to when I was just 7 years old. It was a real White Christmas in Kansas City, MO that year. We had nearly 3 feet of snow! My sisters, 9 and 12 at the time, had me outside all day building snow tunnels in our front yard on Christmas Eve. We must have had 100 feet plus. We had snow ball fights with neighbors, snow bunkers too. It was such a wonderful way to spend the day as the sunset early in the evening for a very special night. Christmas Eve always brings to mind the glockenspiel and the amazing food my parents slaved over for hours. It was always warm in our house, and the silence, anticipation and excitement that night was palpable in every footstep and wind gust. We always went to Christmas Mass in the morning. The music was beautiful. I remember the trumpets and the horn instruments with great brilliance even today. It was a celebration. Christmas and New Years all signify the start of something new for me. It helps me reflect on and remember the past while celebrating the present with the people closet to me. I miss burrowing in snow drift and being able to crawl under the bed, but I know I will soon have my own children to show the path and light the way.
