ALZHEIMER'S SAFETY TIPS FOR WINTER
Call Our 24/7Helpline for Strategies and Support
Winter in Maine presents certain challenges
for those affected by Alzheimer’s, so we offer tips for managing snow, ice, extreme cold temperatures and
decreased sunlight. A person
living with Alzheimer’s may need some extra guidance to dress appropriately for
wintry weather. Tips can be helpful. For example, to avoid slips and falls, make sure boots are non-skid. Assume all surfaces are slick, slow down and take smaller steps.
- Perception changes can make it difficult to
see ice or realize that snow is not a solid surface
- Keep sidewalks and driveways clear of ice and
snow
- Do not overuse ice melt products which can
reduce traction
- Use indoor or garage parking when possible
- Encourage handrail use and walk arm in arm, especially on stairs or in slick spots
- Acquire a state-issued placard enabling
closer parking to buildings
