EASTERN MAINE WALK TO END ALZHEIMER'S
Team Dysart's to Host Fundraising Meal on October 15th
Mike Hartt was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s
disease at age 62. He and his wife Mary Dysart-Hartt started Team Dysarts. Mike explains, “I walk because it helps to be in
a supportive group that understands how incredibly difficult and challenging
this disease is. The walk group understands the stigma around the
disease. They understand Alzheimer's is not just a disease of old age.
Younger-onset Alzheimer's affects people younger than age 65. It is nothing you
are prepared for at 62 years old.”
Mary is the proprietor
of Dysart's Restaurant, which generously gives proceeds from the sales of a
limited edition PurpleBerry Pie. This year, in addition to fundraising for the
Walk to End Alzheimer's, Mary has generated nearly $6,000 for Alzheimer’s
research and care and support services from pie sales.
On Sunday, October 15,
2017 Dysart’s Restaurant located at 1110 Broadway in Bangor, will host a special
Walk to End Alzheimer’s fundraising meal. The limited edition PurpleBerry Pie
will be available and 20% of the night’s proceeds will be donated to the 2017 Eastern
Maine Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The event will include a raffle for a $200 gift
card for wood pellets or oil.

ALZHEIMER'S AFFECTS ALL AGES
We Offer Resources for Kids and Teens
It is great to see children at the Walk to
End Alzheimer’s events. They represent hope and a future of a world without
Alzheimer’s. We know that Alzheimer’s affects all family members and is often
confusing for children. The level of impact varies by family and depends on how
close the child is to the person with dementia. It is important to take time to
talk to kids about what is happening to the person living with Alzheimer’s to
maximize understanding.
We offer strategies to help kids continue meaningful activities
and stay connected with the person living
with Alzheimer’s. The Alzheimer’s Association offers a special kids and teens
section of our website as well as videos, print materials, book reviews and links
to other helpful sites.

SENATE BACKS MAJOR FUNDING FOR ALZHEIMER'S RESEARCH
Appropriations Committee Approves $414 Million Increase
The Senate Appropriations
Committee has approved an additional $414 million increase for Alzheimer’s and
dementia research for the fiscal year 2018 budget. The Alzheimer’s Association,
the Alzheimer’s Impact Movement (AIM) and our network of advocates applaud the
Senate Appropriations Committee for approving this important funding increase. If
signed into law, federal investment in Alzheimer’s and related dementia
research funding would reach $1.8 billion. Leading experts have said a greater
investment is still needed if we are to stay on the path to meet the first goal
of the National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease — preventing and effectively
treating Alzheimer’s by 2025.
The Alzheimer’s Association, AIM and advocates
across the country have been advocating for a $414 million increase since the
start of the 115th Congress. This increase is consistent with the National Institues of Health's request
for additional Alzheimer's and related dementia funding submitted in the second
annual Professional Judgement Budget.
