HAVE FUN ON THE LONGEST DAY

START, JOIN OR SUPPORT A TEAM

Ralph Williams and Priscilla Rowe met while league bowling. Little did they know, they had something more in common than bowling -- they both have been touched by Alzheimer’s disease. Ralph is the caregiver for his wife Sandy who was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s in 2011 and Priscilla lost her mother to the disease in 2008. Ralph and Priscilla formed a Longest Day bowling team, Rowe's Rollers, and will do what they love to end Alzheimer's. The Big 20 Bowling Center, located at 382 US Route 1 in Scarborough, will donate half of the proceeds to Rowe’s Rollers on Saturday, June 24, 2017 from 12 noon to 7 p.m. Form your own Longest Day team and support other teams like Rowe's Rollers.

MAINE ADVOCATES DEMAND WAGE INCREASE FOR DIRECT CARE WORKERS

Local agencies providing care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia are struggling to attract and retain employees across the state. Many long-term care centers, homecare agencies, adult day centers and other home and community based services are turning away new clients due to insufficient staff. This leaves families struggling to maintain these individual’s needs at home. At times family members will be forced to leave their jobs because other help cannot be found for their loved one.

Advocates provided public testimony this week in support for LD 1466: An Act To Address Severe and Ongoing Shortfalls in the Funding of Direct Care Workers in Long-term Care Settings and To Establish the Commission To Study Long-term Care Workforce Issues.  The bill’s call for wage increases for direct care workers will improve access and quality of care here in Maine, and ultimately rein in costs statewide.
