Gene thought to increase Alzheimer’s risk may be a cause
New research suggests that for people who carry two copies of the APOE4 gene — the strongest known genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's — it’s more than a risk factor, it’s a cause of the disease. If this idea is correct, it has implications for the way Alzheimer’s risk is assessed and treatments are developed. The research needs to be confirmed, especially in populations that accurately reflect the diversity of people living with Alzheimer’s.
