Improving air quality may reduce dementia risk
The Alzheimer’s Association International Conference® 2021 (AAIC®), held in Denver and virtually this week, saw researchers networking and collaborating with colleagues from around the world at the largest and most influential meeting dedicated to advancing dementia science. Studies presented at AAIC suggested that improving air quality may improve cognitive function and reduce dementia risk.

Global dementia cases forecasted to triple by 2050
According to research reported at AAIC, scientists estimate that the number of people living with dementia will nearly triple to more than 152 million by 2050. Maria C. Carrillo, Alzheimer’s Association chief science officer, said improvements in healthy lifestyle in adults in developed countries have reduced new cases of dementia, but total numbers are increasing due to the aging of the population.

Transgender adults are more likely to experience cognitive decline
Transgender and gender nonbinary adults in the United States are more likely to report worsening memory and thinking, functional limitations and depression compared to non-transgender adults, according to two studies presented at AAIC. Researchers said this population faces a greater number of health disparities that also are risk factors for dementia, and social inequities experienced by transgender adults are also linked to an increased risk of cognitive impairment.
