Loss of sleep in midlife may increase dementia risk
|
People who regularly slept six hours or less a night in their 50s, 60s and 70s were about 30 percent more likely to develop dementia than those who slept seven hours, according to results of a new study. The increased risk persisted even after researchers accounted for genetic risk for Alzheimer’s, as well as physical and mental health. The Alzheimer’s Association has launched U.S. POINTER-zzz, a U.S. POINTER add-on study that will examine whether lifestyle changes that might reduce Alzheimer’s risk also improve sleep.
