PET imaging may improve Alzheimer's diagnosis and care
Brain scans may improve diagnosis and management of Alzheimer's, according to a new, first-of-its-kind national study sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association and managed by the American College of Radiology. Researchers assessed the use of positron emission tomography (PET) scans to identify Alzheimer's-related amyloid plaques in the brain. Scan results changed the diagnosis of the cause of cognitive impairment in more than one-third of study participants and changed disease management, including medication and counseling, in nearly two-thirds.
