Hearing loss may raise the odds of developing dementia
In a new study, researchers reviewed data from 36 studies including more than 20,000 people worldwide and found an association between age-related hearing loss and increased risk for mental impairment and dementia. The researchers stressed that this is not proof of a cause-and-effect relationship between hearing loss and cognitive decline, and they saw no relationship between hearing loss and Alzheimer's disease. Research results reported at the Alzheimer's Association International ConferenceŽ 2017 also provided clues about associations between cognitive status and hearing in older people.
