Caregiver’s future is tested by family’s history of Alzheimer’s disease
Daisy Duarte, 39, is a caregiver for her mother Sonia, 59, who has Alzheimer’s. Due to a very long history of the disease in her family, Daisy was asked to take part in a clinical study, which included a test to see if she carries the gene for early-onset familial Alzheimer’s. She didn’t think twice about participating, and the test came back positive — one day, she will have Alzheimer’s. In addition to caring for her mother, Daisy now speaks to colleges and other groups to raise awareness in the fight to end the disease.
