Frank Roger Rakes, 77, passed away on May 1, 2021. He was born May 16, 1943, to Gladys Dillon and John Clark Rakes in Beckley, WV. He graduated from Shady Spring High School in 1961 where he was the 120 lb state wrestling champion and WVU in January 1966. He retired from Raleigh County Schools after 33 1/2 years in August 1999. He taught and coached at WWHS, SSHS, and IHS. He coached wrestling, football, and tennis. He was a two-time Raleigh County Teacher of the Year and Coalfield Conference Wrestling Coach of the Year. He was an original inductee of the Raleigh County Wrestling Hall of Fame. He was an avid bike rider and enjoyed running.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Gladys Rakes and his brother John Clark Rakes II.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Cristene “Tina” Oscar Rakes and his daughters Tonya (Mike) Prince of Colorado Springs, CO and Alicia (Johnny) Pachuta of Watkinsville, GA. Grandchildren Michael Prince of Huntersville, NC, MacKenzie (Mike) Green of Shady Spring, WV, Hannah Pachuta of Watkinsville, GA, Nicole Pachuta of Watkinsville, GA, Emma, Pachuta of Watkinsville, GA. Great grandchildren AnnaLeigh Prince of Huntersville, NC and Rowan Green of Shady Spring, WV, and a great granddaughter due in May. And a sister Gypsie Dodson of Charleston, WV.
Celebration of life will be held at North Beckley Church of Christ 3721 Robert C. Byrd Dr. on May 8, 2021. Visitation from 2 PM to 5 PM and service at 5 PM. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Frank’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Association at http://act.alz.org/goto/frankrogerrakes.
