It’s hard to believe that a man who lived with so much vitality is gone. Don O was a kind, loving, vivacious, and charismatic man who touched so many people just by being himself. He was the kind of man that would give you the shirt off his back, the love in his heart, all with a smile and a joke often at his own expense.

He cared for his community, and the people behind it. Donating and helping wherever he could. He was on the school board, he was a high school referee, but most would remember Don as the "Candy Man O". You could find him pulling taffy, setting peanut brittle, twisting candy canes - in his candy store in Central City, CO - a passion carried over from his younger days working with a long time friend at a candy store in Okoboji, IA. I think Don truly lived by the motto” The nectar of life is sweet, but only when shared with others.” I can’t help but think that Don truly wanted to bring a little more sweetness into the world by sharing a smile, a laugh, a drink (Coors Light of course!), and the joy he exuded when making candy for others.

Don O passed at noon on Dec. 20, 2018 of late stage Alzheimer’s. He lived with it for 10 years, 10 years too long if you ask me. When Don went into the Alzheimer’s skilled nursing center, it was a hard transition for us all. Even though his mind was confused, his love was not. Don would often say things like "You know I will love you forever and always." We all knew the depth of his love, and I'd like to think that Don knew or felt ours for him.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth of 28 years who lovingly and selflessly took care of him every day until he passed, his daughter Donda, his son Drew, his stepdaughters Amanda, Kenna, and Alexis, his 2 grandsons Dawson & Jarrett, and his granddaughter Maggie. Plus, the many friends Don made along the way.

We love you Don O, Daddy O, Poppy O. We celebrate your life and mourn the loss of such a living force of joy. May you be drinking a Coors Light in heaven, playing a round of golf and relish in the fact that you were and are truly loved - forever and always!
