One of Alzheimer's most devastating impacts is the loss of memory. Mami was diagnosed with this illness back in the early 2000's. It was really the first time I ever heard of AD.

Coming to terms was difficult. It was a long process of self education, sharing experiences with others and from others. The hardest thought to overcome was knowing that eventually Mami would not recognize me, my kids and other family members and friends. Worst yet, forgetting basic functions such as walking, bathing and eating.

Aceptar y entender esta enfermedad fue difícil. Fue un proceso largo de educarnos acerca de esta enfermedad, compartir experiencias entre nosotros mismos y con amistades y personas que pasaron por situaciones similares. Lo mas ftal de sobrellevar fue el aspecto de saber que eventualmente Mami ya no reconocerá a sus hijos y otros seres queridos. Y peormente que pierda funciones básicas como lo son el caminar, comer, etc.

Throughout the years, it became somewhat of a roller coaster in trying to provide the best care for Mami. Many family disagreements lead to a lot of confusion and misunderstandings.

A través del tiempo, la situación de Mami llego a ser como un montana rusa acerca de como proveer el mejor cuidado para ella. Muchos desacuerdos de familia hicieron que tuviéramos mucha confusion y mal entendimientos.

In the end, all her children (my siblings and I) decided that we would work for a common goal: help Mami have the best life she could have. One of my Mami's wishes was that she wanted to return to live in Ambato-Ecuador (her home town), where she was born and raised. We managed to find a Godsend caretaker to help us fulfill that wish. And so we took Mami back to Ecuador in 2008 where she remained for many years before returning back to Chicago (her 2nd home town).

Al final, todos sus hijos decidimos que todos trabajaremos por on objetivo común: Ayudar a que Mami tuviera la mejor vida posible. Uno de los deseos de Mami fue que quería volver a vivir en su ciudad y país natal (Ambato-Ecuador), donde nació y se crió. Pudimos encontrar una persona (en realidad una bendición de dios) que la cuidara como si fuera su propia madre. Entonces pudimos llevar a Mami de vuelta a Ambato, donde vivió y gozo por muchos años.

Fast forward to 2017, her health had been gradually and slowly declining; while she was able to remain mostly independent, Mami did need a lot of assistance. None the less, she was able to enjoy her moments with family. Eventually, a bad case of pneumonia caused her brain to fall into a dementia/Alzheimer's cliff (a.k.a final dementia stage) from which she was not able to recover.

Volviendo al 2017, la salud de Mami seguía empeorando gradualmente, nada de gravedad pero lentamente ensenando mas síntomas de Alzheimer's. A pesar de enfermedad latente, Mami pudo disfrutar sus momentos con familia y amistades. Eventualmente, Usando una analogía de boxeo) un golpe a la quijada (Herpes Zoster hace 4 años) y un gancho al hígado (pneumonia en sus ultimas 2 semanas) hizo que su enfermedad de demencia se desbo en el abismo de Alzheimer's. Esto hizo que cayera en su etapa final de la cual no pudo recuperarse.

We felt really sad and helpless to see Mami loose the ability to eat, talk and walk on her own, in a matter of days.

Nos sentimos totalmente tristes e inútiles de mirar como Mami perdió la habilidad de caminar, hablar y comer en solo pocos dias.
