Betty grew up in the shadow of the Depression era and WWII. From that she learned the importance of family, friends and neighbors, and being practical. Folks used to say about her: "She's little but oh, my!!" She met Ralphie, the love of her life, in 1947 and from him she learned how to dance and have a good time. As a member of Delta Theta Tau Sorority she served others. Her years of raising children coincided with her career as one of San Jose's first women police officers. Betty held office in the Women's Police Officers Association as well as the International Police Association, and thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie of both organizations. There were always cops in the house. Needless to say, her kids were pretty well-behaved and there was less crime in San Jose during her reign!

Ralph and Betty built their dream home and happily spent their retirement years actively involved with their grandchildren, bowling, and enjoying exotic travels with dear friends. A softie at heart, Betty could never pass by a little child without engaging it in a game of peek-a-boo.

Betty's slip into Alzheimer's disease became evident with the passing of Ralph, when a simple task like replacing a flashlight battery proved too challenging for her. The fierce independence that defined her personality often made it difficult for her to accept help, and added to the heartbreak of her decline. But even through the difficult Alzheimer's years, Betty's feisty spirit continued to shine and she never stopped reaching out to others in her own way. A new softness came over Betty in her last few years when once again she could enjoy babies, but now in the form of dolls. Ever the great Mom, she would tend to the doll as she did all the children in her life, with quiet kisses, pats, and peek-a-boos. She loved and was loved by many and will be sorely missed.

Betty was a good teacher to new officers. When I started on the department she was very good at teaching us rookies all about the records department. I remember her well.....
