My father, Stewart Raymond, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease in May 2008. Sadly, it was what he always dreaded because his mother passed away after living with Alzheimer's for 6 years.
My father is a generous man and is doing something most 82-year-olds don't do--along with my mother (also 82) he is providing a home for my daughter, Darcy, and her daughter, Brooklyn. There was nowhere for them to go when Darcy's marriage fell apart and my parents offered and took them in.
My father is a loving male role model to Brooklyn. Early on in the disease, he lost his temper repeatedly with Brooklyn (who is 2-1/2 years at this writing). With medication, his temper has subsided and he's a very loving great grandfather to a young girl who adores him!
It's hard to watch the disease progress and after going through this with my grandmother, I know what to expect.
The worst part about Alzheimer's is that it takes our loved ones away from us even before they depart this earth. I hope and pray they will find a cure very soon to prevent this horrible disease from hurting even more families than it already has.
