Our Dad lost his 4-year battle with Alzheimer's today. He will be sorely missed by his wife of 62 years, the four of us and our spouses and his 9 grandchildren. We will always remember the humor he brought so effortlessly to every encounter and conversation. The stories he loved to tell and retell. The gentle guidance he'd give, the opinion he might spare and instead give the "look" that needed no words. We will miss his easy-going nature, the car rides to nowhere-in-particular and the cross country drives, the occasional afternoon beer on the patio, and again... his stories, there were so many...and so many more cherished memories, we can't possibly list them all.
At the end of this long painful day, the most precious legacy we take away from our father's life, the most important thing that he taught us, is that what matters most in life is family. We have known this for a long time and have tried to teach it to our children. But we have never felt it more than today, more than now, at this time of loss, sadness, and grief.
We want to say a special thanks to our Mom who cared for Dad for so many years, especially for her tenderness and patience in the last few. Mom, you are so strong, so brave, so loved and we are so lucky to have you. It doesn't feel right to let the countless caregivers go unmentioned. This is truly a profession of selfless, wonderful people: administrators, doctors, nurses and aids, you all made this most horrible disease and heart-wrenching journey a bit more comfortable.
Pray for a cure,
Rest in peace Dad.
